SECOND KILL

Dorcas was restless and aroused from sleep several nights later. The shroud of darkness had covered the jungle. No sounds, nor chirps, nor roars—it became eerie quiet. A musty odor drifted through her nostrils, and a sensation of unwanted prickly hair alerted her to the horrid creature she had seen before. The clouds are hiding the fullness of the moon. Where’s my mirror? I must look. She groped around her bedtable—nothing. Dorcas felt for the small flashlight on the floor beside her bed, and, searching with the light, she found pieces of the broken mirror scattered in the corner of the room. The shards of glass were too tiny to see her reflection. Frightened, and without knowing why, Dorcas left the tukul and ran horrified into the jungle—yet—strange. I feel so powerful and free. A hyena’s shrill laugh emitted from her throat and startled her. She cocked her head when another hyena in the distance answered her. It aroused her interest, and she roamed the jungle to no avail, looking for the caller. Dorcas rested for a while, now accustomed to her hyena form—she licked her paws. Small animals ran by and engaged her attention. She tracked them and then lost interest.

Morning light approached, and hunger pangs drove Dorcas to creep along the village perimeter. She recognized a path—it seemed familiar, but she didn’t know why—it took her toward a large building. Dorcas moved closer. I smell the sweet scent of blood. She traced the smell to a person who slept on the hospital porch, unaware it was his last sleep. Dorcas leaped upon his pulsating carotid artery. He had no time to scream, and she ate until she was full.

Her acute hearing alerted her—Movement—a rustle in the bushes, and it was somewhere close by—danger. She spotted him in the shadows nearby—a giant male hyena. He was dark with prominent spots on his body and had a white streak of head hairs between his ears. Frightened, she ran back deeper into the jungle.
